"It might seem to be normal that a professor is always up with the newest topics and technologies, but most of them just talk about it on a strategic level, what makes Elisabeth different, is that she often let me ask myself: Oh shit, I should have known that – damn, who’s the Digital Native now – me or her?! I think that’s the biggest compliment I can make her."
About
I like new challenges and courageous entrepreneurs from the German SME sector and craft enterprises. This probably also has its roots in my family. My grandfather was a master printer who founded a medium-sized print shop in the Rhineland before the First World War; he is a pioneer and role model for me.
My father also learnt lead printing, and even after he became a protestant pastor in Düsseldorf, he designed and set up the newsletters and brochures for his parish himself. I often watched him do this, joined in and then did my own thing.
My professional perspective has been shaped by my dramaturgical work at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus right after graduating from high school. And then by my versatile journalistic work as an author, editor and creative director in the feature-literature-essay editorial department of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) and, after the merger, of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR).
My experience in editorial-creative content production spans the timeline of media evolution since the 90s. I have experienced all technical solutions from mono sound and tape to surround sound and 3D environments and worked with them myself as a journalistic editor and creative director in production and editorial teams.
Since the noughties, we have had to constantly respond to changing behaviors on the part of our target audiences, apply and understand, or develop new content formats and innovative business models, and apply emerging technologies. To achieve this, I work in an international network with young graduates and experienced colleagues.
I also read a lot and spend a lot of time talking about projects, models, and ideas with researchers, decision makers in industrial innovation labs, and other stakeholders in organizations and companies.
I have never limited myself to a single professional field because I believe that the global challenges facing media, business and society are interdisciplinary and I want to make my contribution at the intersection of culture, media technology and people. Cultural knowledge and cultural techniques help people in all areas of our society, in organizations and companies, to communicate measurably better and to make sustainable decisions.
My academic background includes design thinking for media prototyping, foresight research, and change management, in addition to literature, communication, linguistics, philosophy, and film and media studies, in which I earned my Doctorate.
In my 30s, I lived in Kenya and worked as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. I then spent many years in Germany as a professor of cross-media journalism and online media management. From Nairobi, I have traveled to all four continental regions of Africa. As a journalist and university lecturer, I’ve been able to travel to European countries, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and India for projects.
So it's convenient that I already trained intensively in badminton as a schoolgirl and became the vice champion in doubles in Düsseldorf together with my sister. To this day, wherever I go, I look for a local badminton team to get a little insight into everyday life through the game.
I believe that the best way to help people around the world understand the present and think critically about the future is to tell credible and educational stories. That's why I write a lot and have published numerous books, articles, features, and radio plays, including for the publishers Hoffmann und Campe, Rheinwerk, and Routledge, as well as for SWR, MDR, and NDR.
In order to provide more people with stories, in 2020 I donated my large library, which I have systematically built up since I was thirteen, to the new "Dr. Hermann Gundert Museum and Study Centre" (honoring Hermann Hesse's grandparents) in Thalassery, India. I know the local people who are hungry for reading from my visits to Kerala, and I know that my books are in the right place: They are being read and studied.
In 2020, I was awarded the Gisela Bonn Prize in Stuttgart for my special achievements in the field of Indo-German relations, jointly by the "Indian Council for Cultural Relations" New Delhi and the "Indo-German Society" Stuttgart.
